The NMFS Permit Shop supports strong encryption (128 bit cipher, Secure Socket Layer Class 3 [SSL-3]) for credit card transactions. The actual level of security depends upon the browser you are using (and perhaps how it is set up). If at all possible, you should use or set up your browser to use full 128 bit, SSL-3 security. This will ensure that your credit card information cannot be viewed by others, even if they intercept the packet containing that information. If your browser employs a lesser strength encryption (e.g. 40 bit cipher) you can still perform credit card transactions. The NMFS Permit Shop does not require the use of 128 bit but we do recommend its use.
