HELP: Canceling a Permit

Help Page: Canceling a Permit

An NMFS permit should be cancelled when it is no longer in use. Under certain circumstances, this is required by law. It is good practice to cancel any NMFS permit which will no longer be used by the permit holder.

A vessel permit should be cancelled if:
  • the permitted vessel is sold.
  • the permitted vessel is bought but the previous owner has failed to cancel the permit.
  • the permitted vessel is destroyed.
  • the permitted vessel is abandoned.
  • the permitted vessel is not used for fishing anymore.
A tournament permit should be cancelled if:
  • the permitted tournament is cancelled.
A dealer permit should be cancelled if:
  • the permitted dealer ceases his/her business.
  • the permitted dealership is sold
  • the permitted dealership is bought and the previous owner has failed to cancel the permit.
  • the permitted dealership ceases any activities requiring an NMFS permit
Permit holders cannot cancel permits themselves. This must be done by an NMFS customer service representative. To cancel a permit, call NMFS customer service at 888-872-8862 between the hours of 8am and 5pm EST on a week day. Be sure to have your permit number handy.
